I remember liking Quake II as it had primary and secondary objectives. So it made it seem less repetitive. I was disappointed when I went and tried Quake, and it was not like that.
Yes, I came to Quake 2 after playing the original and was surprised in the other direction - that they had put objectives and sub-objectives into it after apparently being so adamant about doing a very straightforward Doom-like game for Quake. Though I only recently learned that Quake as we know it was made in a huge hurry after cutting back a lot of more ambitious ideas they had for it.
Just looking up System Shock and Quake II on Wikipedia, apparently Quake II is only Quake II because they got sick of getting names rejected for violating trademarks so went with one they already owned.
