More couple friends

A very long time ago, when I first started off this journal, it was meant to be a way of staying in touch with friends at university, and so people I knew in real life were regularly mentioned in it. Our group developed a sort of strange passive way of not quite talking to each other through them, talking into a void about events and names in the ( Read more... )

God, he is hedgehogesque. I like to think that road sign means "We don't know where the hell you're headed to either".

The contrast was amazing, coming in over a bridge - straight from the huge overhead signs saying 95 North, 95 South, 1 East, to turning away from the main road and immediately seeing one on a pole that simply said "?". Thanks, sign - very helpful. I think we saw three of them when going into the town - we never did find out what they were for or who imagined that they would be of any practical use.

That's actually a standard road sign all across the country, not just in Maine. It indicates the location of a tourist information center, where visitors just like yourself can go to get all sorts of information.

The thought it's meant to provoke is "Questions? Go this way!" Sadly, the thought it usually provokes is "...Huh?"

Something that I frequently say on this journal is just how much I keep discovering is different about this country, and that even though I've been here for nearly five years, I still get tripped up by these things. In this latest revelation, I had no clue that that was the standard tourist information sign here - I had just assumed, through its use on the Internet, that the blue "i" that I'm familiar with was the standard sign to use. Though now I think about it, I haven't seen any of those either.

In this case, the first sign of its type we saw was out in the middle of nowhere - it might have been easier to interpret if it had also had an arrow on it indicating that whatever it meant was ahead, instead of just implying... "well, I don't know".

Speaking of the Sinner, have you seen it recently?

It's like seeing people that you went to school with have ended up in an old folk's home.

It's weird looking back at a completely different page style, and yet I do still recognize the occasional name there! I've got to wonder what the chatroom's like... obviously not as good, without us, but if it's still got the same special blend of pomposity and bewilderment.

WiredSoc seems to be all but dead, and I've just realized I've forgotten to pay them for my web hosting for the last three years. I was, however, impressed that a fuzz-faced representative had risen to the post of administrator :) I don't remember even having avatars, before...
