2020 John Leonard Prize Finalists

It turns out only one of the six books I nominated for the 2020 National Book Critics Circle's John Leonard Prize for a first book is a finalist (some years none of my nominees make it to the next round), and that book is Luster by Raven Leilani. I'm curious, how do you get into the National Book Critics Circle. I assume it's a consequence of something real, like getting paid to generate reviews for an actual newspaper. After being on the Internet for years, I forget that things like that exist.

NBCC applicants must provide 3 publication bylines or 1 byline and a statement answering the following questions: 1.) Why do you wish to join the NBCC? 2.) What skills do you think you can contribute to the organization? (For example, social media expertise, graphic design, fundraising, publicity, marketing, blog posts, grant writing, etc). Dues are $50/year for freelancers, $85 if a publication is paying the membership of a single staff member or $70 per staff member if a publication is paying for multiple staff members.
