How We Came to Live Here

I just played a one-shot of How We Came to Live Here. A one-shot clearly isn't ideal for showing off all that the game has to offer, but it was enough for my group to tell a neat story and form some strong impressions.

I'd played one and a half times before at conventions. The things that stood out to me then wound up being the highlights of this ( Read more... )

Oh, man! Gathering Threat is terrible for one-shots, a hard-learned lesson for me. I even say so in the description in the book! Don't feel bad, though. I found that out, rewrote the description, and then went on to use two more times in convention one-shots myself.

The tracks' titles and point sequences seemed so clear to me that I only skimmed the descriptions. But I was overconfident in my assessment of what the numbers meant. Having run a few conflicts now, I think I have a better idea of how the Threat Pool compares to the Heroes' options in a game with a small number of conflicts (so they can burn through Traits etc.).

More O.O.C. narration, less acting? davidberg August 25 2010, 05:43:56 UTC
Forgot to mention this in the initial post:

During postgame chat, one of the players suggested that the scope of the conflict resolution might have been more appealing to him in a game where he wasn't getting in character as much, as was more just telling a story. That way, his focus would be less on "Do I succeed or fail at this thing I'm trying?" and more on the way the plot turns as Victory Points are spent on character changes.

The rest of us agreed that would be interesting to try, but I doubt we'll get around to it, as we do like getting in character and acting.
