Two Sides of Growing Up

This was dance weekend in our home and our little town.  Both my daughters take dance lessons throughout the school year, and their annual recital was on Saturday afternoon.  The younger one takes tap and ballet; the older one takes tap and jazz.  So both of them had two performances in the recital, and both of them did great.  Nancy and I were ( Read more... )

Yes, I know, this too shall pass. And then pass again with the younger one. But we're still on the leading edge of this storm, and resolution seems a long way off.

Glad it got you misty-eyed -- did the same to me as I wrote it.

It is. But it won't be the last by a long shot, and that's part of life, of stepping out from under our protection and standing in the beautiful but sometimes harsh light of the world.

That's a beauty of being a parent. You can always love and care for them and share their life as they grow. This can be so rewarding like seeing them succeed as in the dancing or seeing them react in a very sensitive way to life. Giving your perspective to them helps them make their own judgements. Sometime my kids thank me for my opinions and sometimes they give back to me.

You're right, Donna. I know that there are things my parents told me years ago that I've never forgotten, that I still lean on when I need reassurance or wisdom. I'm not sure I acknowledged at the time how much their words meant to me, but I know that even if my daughter seems to ignore the things I tell her, she's filing it away for later use...
