At the risk of sounding like a credit card commercial or public service announcement.....

We got a call yesterday from the fraud protection department at one of our credit card companies.  Seems they spotted some "unusual activity" on our card and wanted to check in to see if we'd been making some big purchases.  What kind of purchases?  A $2,400.00 ( Read more... )

Did you get off the line and call the credit card company according to the number on your printed bill? I ask because calls of this sort are now a form of fraud.

Yes, thanks for asking, Sherwood. The original call actually came in while we were out. I called the credit card company back. Also, Nancy had tried to use the card just a bit earlier and it hadn't gone through. In this case, there really was a problem, and our company actually fixed it. But you're right -- you can't be too careful.

Oh, good. I've heard of two people stung by this one, though in both cases the caller said, "Just to verify you are who you say you are" and they went through name, addy, and all the stuff they actually had, then slipped in "verify the number on the back of the card, for your pwn protection' and of course that snapped the trap.
