It doesn't take a lot of snow to convince the local powers-that-be to cancel school. We barely got more than a dusting last night, mixed with a bit of sleet and freezing rain. But that was enough. I grew up in eastern Virginia, and even though we didn't have snow often, it still didn't warrant a day off of school for us unless it was a foot or more. When I was in the second grade, I was home recovering from a terrible case of the measles, when it snowed about six inches. I was the only kid who got to stay home from school, and I couldn't go out and play in the snow because I was still recovering.

I know what you mean. I lived near Lake Superior in Wisconsin until I was ten. And remember waiting for the bus in snow at least shin level.
The next five in Mt Vernon, Indiana just two or three inched did it there.
Last two years going to Houston just snow flurries in air did it then.
And then not going to school but living in New Orleans just the threat of snow and they cancel school.
I guess mainly becase of the lack of equipment for snow removal the farther south you go.
Oh by the way schools pushed back here in Evansville, Indiana two hours today.
