Usually, when a random Japanese comes up to me with the intention of practicing their English, I indulge them. I mean, it`s not asking a lot really, and you know, I do sort of feel a bit like an ambassador for my country sometimes. A lot of the time I`m just happy for the conversation ( Read more... )

Well, they definitely might leave you alone if you say you're Russian - Russians are not really liked up here at least. But then many Japanese people speak Russian too.

Go for something like Norwegian. Or say you're French Canadian - even the French don't know how to speak to the French Canadians.

Heh, I used to have a method I used a couple times in Ueno when people who spoke a little bit of English came up to me and tried to get me to sign something.

I'd tell them that I didn't speak English in French and they'd leave me alone :o).

Except one time I was fully prepped for it and said it - in Japanese.

OH! the hounding.

Never tried that one again.

Omigod! What are the chances of running into a German-speaking Japanese fellow here in Tochigi-ken? Geez, Louise. What a funny story! Bet it wasn't so funny at the time, though, eh?

It was pretty mortifying to be honest... I was just waiting for a coachload of my students to walk past, talk to me in English and blow my cover... that would have just capped off the situation.
