As a recent Union convert to Rugby League, the one aspect that really bothers me is the inevitable, predictable kick on the sixth tackle. It strikes me that if the authorities were to ban kicking on the sixth, then it would improve the game a little. You could still kick on the fifth (or indeed, fourth, third...) but players would have to balance losing losing one "down" against the likelihood of a kick reaping results.
The other aspect of this otherwise marvellous game that irritates me is the non-competitive scrummaging. You could have meaningful scrums without them having to be the dangerous machofest that currently exists in Union. When my father played union in the 1950s, front row forwards would bind, then the locks, and then the back rows. Only when the ball was in the scrum were they allowed to start pushing. Maybe league could show the way by adapting something similar.
Best regards,
