OK, so you've seen the Von Slatt masterpiece and Datamancer's beautiful variants on the theme of keyboards. There are other other versions too, mbarrick  has made a version out of a considerably cheaper keyboard. Given I too am on a budget this is the plan I've followed.

So the round buttons themselves aren't from an old typewriter? I've been trying like hell to not dismantle a perfectly innocent non-working old typewriter and pillage it for keys.

No. No pillaging required. I'd have had to sacrifice at least two to get all the keys, and even then it wouldn't be quite enough. I'd then have to find buttons that matched the keys, and it all seemed like too much effort. ;) Plus I think that the buttons was probably the cheaper route. (I might have spent less if I'd used even plainer ones.)
