One time we were driving through Chicago south on I-94. As we approached the Loop, we realized it was the Air and Water show, and the USAF F-16 Thunderbirds were coming in from four compass points in high speed descents. I think this was just about the time of the NATO mission into Kosovo -- and for the first time I could imagine what it would be like to be in a modern city under attack. Like these photographs, a real disconnect with the normal and the mundane.
