True tales of human drama

I've mentioned a time or three that I voulenteer every Thursday evening at a homeless shelter in Vancouver. This is a place, where, unsurprisingly, emotions run pretty strong; you get a lot of people who have personality disorders showing up, and just as many people who honestly have nothing wrong with them but a run of bad luck and are having a ( Read more... )

Your tale has brought warmth to my cold pitiful heart.

Well, stories of homeless men experiencing moments of gay panic in public places will do that. I think it touches something tender deep within all of our hearts. :)

If it was just his heart being tenderly touched, we wouldn't have this panic ;)

Great stories. Keep up the good work and witness among the Baptists. ;)

I reckon I ought to keep showing up consistently before I start witnessing per se, if indeed I ever do. My friend Ray, who goes along with me, seems to have no such qualms, and has received some pretty specifically cold shoulders as a consequence. I'm not sure that's really what I'm looking for.

I was only joking about that one. As a Baptist in my youth we were told to use everything as a witnessing tool. So it was more a joke about that. But you are smarter. :)

i know that I haven't said it before, however, will say it now. I know that it is awesome that you're doing this and awesome that she, the little girl loved the clothes. By the way my sister has some clothes that she would like to donate, where would we send it.

Well, I'm going there in a couple of hours. When I go, I'll ask about it and let you know tonight afterwards. Very cool of her, incidentally.

Alright, I asked about this, and basically, so long as they're freshly-laundered, it's okay to pretty much just show up with them. So, if you want to put your sister in touch with me (you have my e-mail address, right?), we can arrange a means by which this can be made to happen.

i wouldn't mind getting involved with this kind of volunteer work. do you know if they need another pair of helping hands?

Well, as it happens, my friend Ray, who had traditionally been coming along with me, is now kind of otherwise committed (family crisis and such), and so there's an opening, if you will. The actual amount of work varries quite a bit from one week to the next; on the week after the wellfare cheques come out can be quite quiet, whereas the week BEFORE wellfare is crazy-hectic, and every hand is needed at all times.

The short answer, then, is "yes". I tend to show up around 5:30 PM or thereabouts, every thursday night, and hang around until 9:15 PM or so. It's located just a few blocks away from Broadway skytrain station. I know you'll be out of town next week, but if the week after that you'd like to join me, then what say you to meeting me at Broadway some time around then so we can travel up there together?
