Disrupting the Olympic Torch Ceremony

These past few days, I'm sure you've all shared my abject disgust of the protestors in San Fransisco doing their level best to turn the Olympic Torch ceremony into something political. These people - no matter what their intentions may be - are all basically barbarians, one and all. You know, I didn't even really mean to fool anyone, but I've had a number of people tell me that they were - for one period of time or another - deceived. Either I'm really bad at sarcasm or I'm really good at unintended deadpan.

I think the world is absorbed in so effective a parody of itself here that the leap back into actually noticing what's going on is always a bit unexpected.

I wonder if it really is parody. To me, it seems like the world is being uncommonly authentic in its crass, self-absorbed apathy to the suffering of those who are out of sight. It seems less like parody than a moment of uncommon candor.
