Jesus the Magical Meat-Puppet Man

I was thinking today about a particular line of “thought” put forth by certain christians of a particularly evangelical stripe. I know that the odious Ray Comfort has popularized it, though I don’t know if it originates with him or not ( Read more... )

you really hit the nail on the head here.

I have been thinking these same thoughts... especially the paragraph about god setting us up by making these arbitrary rules and sacrificing himself to himself for the loophole to make himself happy.

that gorilla analogy was just perfect.

:sigh:

Well, it's even more than that, isn't it? We're told that the sacrifice of Jesus was "Necessary"; that it "neeed" to happen in order to "redeem mankind." That, in short, an omnipotent god - theoretically capable of anything and everything - was somehow incapable of coming up with another effective approach, and was constrained to this overly-complicated and appalling display of sadomasochism.

Could he not have, for example, simply decided to cause hell not to exist anymore?

It's the sort of question which I suspect we're not supposed to ask.

it is just a little depressing.

i do wish more people would just sit down and think about it objectively. and not their version of "objective"-- no more giving it the benefit of the doubt.

:sigh:

I keep meaning to!

If only I had the powers of Jamie Madrox, to create multiple copies of myself and subsequently re-absorb them into myself, OH MAN would I ever have already written a book or five by now. There just never seems to be enough hours in the day for all the thousand projects I ought to be pursuing...!

The born again christians are notorious for the idea that accepting jesus into your life is the only way to get into heaven. You can be a serial killer, but if you accept jesus right before you die, youll be in heaven. While a devout rabbi or priest who has done nothing but good in his life will be cast into the lake of fire.

The premise being that your sins are irrelevant, since jesus died for them. Therefore, there is no point in being good, you only have to accept jesus.

This is what I refer to as the "blank check" ideology. lol

Despite all of this, I fucking <3 born agains, because of their comic book tracts. Jack Chick is the shit.

At 12 cents each, you can get the entire collection for about forty bucks. STEAL!

Yeah, it's really the most morally vacuous of all religions; the point isn't to be a good person, since it's impossible to do so. The point is to walk around feeling like shit all day long because of your failure to do so.

“Well, then, by your own admission, you’re a lying, adulterous, thieving blasphemer. Do you still think that you’re a good person?”

Why yes, actually, thanks for asking!

I always enjoy reading your thoughts on Christianity.
