You could always buy a second-hand Xbox. That way you're only supporting Evil Robot Bill when you buy the games. :)

PC medix in Hillsborough sell modded X-boxes. One touch of a button and it behaves like a normal X-Box, including being compatible with xbox live etc. And of course the modded bit comes with DIVX/XVID playing software etc.

I'd be very wary of any Xbox mod that says it's Live compatible. I thought that the latest dashboard patch (for Live 3.0) detected all chips and banned you the second you go online, including those that can be supposedly turned off.

Anyway, Xbox Scene is worth a read on the subject. :)
