"Mmm." She thought about it. How was she feeling? "Bored, sleepy, lonely, horny, kind of hungry, and sore." She nodded, figuring that about covered it. "But mostly lonely, 'cause I missed you."

Jaime was hesitant to ask what Ice had wanted. It was kind of like getting called to the principal's office, wasn't it? But Mal hadn't done anything bad ... unless he was breaking some law by sleeping with her and Ice wanted to fuss about that.

Either way, Jaime didn't want to hear it.

A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

"Is that a fact?" he asked, "In that order precisely, or would you care to rearrange that a mite?"

He crossed over to her, still avoiding the subject he really had to speak on.

"Weren't gone that long," he said softly, "Mayhaps you're a little attached, hmm?"

He chuckled.

"Oh, please," she said, rolling her eyes playfully. "Everyone knows I'm madly in love with you. I mean, I couldn't make it more obvious than I have," she teased, but there was enough of a truth underlying the statements that she wasn't sure it really came off as teasing.

She flushed a little, busying her hands with plucking at the covers, gazing down toward her lap. "I think the order was good," she said, hoping to kind of skirt around the earlier teasing. "Well, I guess I'm not bored or lonely now, because you're here. I'm still kind of sleepy, and hungry, and I'm always horny." She grinned up to him. "Though I figure the sore bit'll clear up in a few weeks."

"Might be sooner'n that," he said, "'M gonna take you t'see Laurel in a short while. Ice says she can heal you up good an' proper a mite faster'n the traditional way."

Mal swallowed, not wanting to say the next words, but knowing he had to, that a better opportunity wasn't going to present itself and that he'd avoid the subject for a long while if he didn't take it.

"They need you," he said quietly, "Got a job for you, one as only you can do."

He knew he'd have to say more than that, tell her the whole truth of it, but that was the most he could make himself say just then, without prodding.
