"Why ain't I allowed to go to Riverfell?" a gruff voice demanded of her as Jayne stepped into the frippy orchard.

He weren't so fond of the smell and he weren't so fond of the place in general, but since this was where she was, he wanted to know just why in the sphincter of hell they weren't sending the gunhand to shoot a gun. Jayne was completely oblivious to the idea that he might be interrupting something.

Ice turned to regard the man who'd spoken. She wondered if he'd gone to the office first, and if he'd run into Severus - or if Laurel had headed him off. "Two reasons," Ice said quietly. "The same reason I'm keeping Jake here - the action is going to be here when they come in, and I need people who can ... shoot the invaders."

She fixed her grey gaze on him. "And because I shouldn't like to see you tempted away from us by whatever Damion might have to offer you now." Damion may or may not want the merc, but he'd steal him on principle alone.

Ice was disinclined to chance it. She honestly wasn't sure the binding would hold against Damion, since it had been set against Acevona. And she had little doubt that Jayne would talk for the right price.

Jayne grunted, nodding; made sense, if nothing else. Of course, that didn't mean he had to like it.

"Leastways you're smart about it," he muttered, "Reckon that'll help in all this; knowin' folk. When I was there, there weren't much of that."

He shrugged a shoulder and leaned against a tree, arms crossed over his chest.

"Mm. When you were there, a novice was leading them. Damion's different. He'll know his people. Know how to use them."

Much as she hoped to know her people ... but she thought she was doing a good job of getting to know them.

Of course, now she was cheating a bit since Belle could get into their heads, but she was at least using what she learned.

Canting her head slightly, Ice regarded Jayne curiously. "Did you stalk me out to the orchard just to ask me that?"
