First Truth

[Dlanor is standing by the phone, holding it in her hand almost absentmindedly. After a long pause, she starts to set it down, but brings it back up to her ear. Definitely a dial tone. So the wires haven't been cut. At least, not yet. She holds it away from her, but still close enough so everyone can pick up what she's saying ( Read more... )

... Did you say Rokkenjima?

For the moment, that is the case. When I spoke with him outside of the game, he seemed sympathetic towards her, perhaps even compassionate. He is fighting to save her...so he can kill her with his own hands.

...The situation is complicated.

What's wrong with him? He shouldn't be showing compassion at all. Battler should had turned his heart to ice and ripped her to shreds by now. Has he already forgotten how he was tricked from the third game...?

... [and there will be a sigh] I don't know what you think, but I think Beatrice could be playing her North Wind and Sun Strategy. That has to be the answer.

I do not believe that is the case. Miss Beatrice is completely unresponsive. It is truly a pitiable situation. I do not blame him for showing compassion. To see such an energetic woman in that state...yes, it is truly pitiable.

She has placed all her trust in him, so it is necessary to reciprocate that trust. Otherwise, he will certainly fail and I will be the one to execute her.

... If you aren't joking, then... Was that really the ending I wanted...?

Aaah, it's useless. I guess I'd have to talk to Battler if I ever see him here about what he's planning. I just hope he hasn't forgotten about me, that's all.

... Are you a witch hunter as well?

Ushiromiya Battler is a good man. I doubt he has forgotten about you. After all, it is still his intention to kill Beatrice.

This is my intention as well. You are correct in guessing I am a witch hunter. My department deals mostly in judiciary matters, but I am assigned to execute witches who have already been judged.

... [mentally kicking herself for doubting Battler] You'll have to forgive me from my shouting earlier. I just hate being left out of the loop like this. Especially since I'm out of the game and all.

Knowing Beatrice, I'm guessing she's really popular over at your department. That'd give her an ego boost for sure.

...I have been yelled at many times as of late. It is no trouble. Your voice does not screech like Miss Erika's occasionally does.

Your assessment of Miss Beatrice is correct. She was quite pleased when I mentioned the size of her file.

Huh. It sounds like you don't like this girl at all. It's pretty relieving to hear furniture voice their own options about their masters.

... Even though you're hunting Beatrice, it sounds like you don't hold any grudges with her.

...I pity her. Miss Bernkastel is an abusive master. This has caused her to become abusive as well. Those raised without love will never be able to understand it.

Though it is my job to kill witches, I feel no malice toward them. I find witches to be pitiable creatures. I must be cold for my occupation...but when I am not working, I try to be more personable.

...I had a similar conversation with your brother. He also thought it strange that I bore no personal grudge toward witches. I told him, and I will tell you, that magic is not my enemy. I only wish to exterminate evil. Beatrice...has used her magic for evil purposes. So she is a witch that must be executed. Regardless of my personal feelings on the matter, that is my job.

"Without love, it cannot be seen", right?

I... had a similar experience. For a long time, I hated Aunt Eva. She tried to be a mother figure to me and all I did was shun her away. She was my only ally in that cold world... and I didn't see her with any love until I reached the truth for myself and saw the Black Witch with my very own eyes.

But in the end, I fully agree with you. Magic doesn't exist to be used for evil purposes, it's used to make people happy.

Exactly. That is why witches who use magic for sinister purposes must be executed. They are abusing a force that should only be used to help others.

You understand magic very well. I see why Miss Bernkastel chose you as a witch hunter. It is a shame I never got an opportunity to cross swords with you. I believe you would have been an excellent opponent.

Thank you. If there's a chance, then maybe we could fight someday on this game board. If Battler was a worth opponent for you, then I would want to follow in his footsteps.

I would enjoy that very much. If you should ever want to challenge me, make sure you commit Knox's Decalogue to memory. It would not be a fair fight if I knew them and you did not.
