Wanda hadn't been in the United States is some time. She'd lived in New York and California and traveled back and forth for all her years as an Avenger but she still felt like a small town European girl; and even the relatively suburban atmosphere of the mall in Minnesota made her feel jittery. Or maybe it was why she was here.
She'd spent three days in her home, not eating, not sleeping, not speaking...she'd destroyed nearly all her toys and books. Then she'd had a quiet, odd visit from a chatty, odd boy and...something snapped. She realized she couldn't hide in her tiny apartment in her tiny village, waiting for someone to show up and save her. So, she'd packed the last of her father's dolls, her battered copies of Pride and Prejudice, The Hobbit and Jane Eyre and the uniform Steve had left behind; set fire to the rest of her belongings and using the savings she'd hidden in her floor board she set off to America. Wanda stopped in New York to speak with Layla Miller who told her where she'd sent Steve Rogers. Layla had been expecting her and had given her a suitcase full of Sue Richards' clothes and a Fantasticberry (a Blackberry modified by Reed).
