That's more or less what I thought when you first let me read "The Exile Mage"!
Too much of the fantasy genre is either entirely predictable from the get-go, or reveals events in a puzzle-like manner but takes thousands and thousands of pages to put the pieces together (I can think of no less than five epic series that fit into this latter description just off the top of my head). If you can bury your plot(s) in the world of the Gimyrresh and manage to tell the histories of that world in no more than a few hundred pages, you'll really have accomplished something. I can't wait to read it!
You know, that's sort of the state my novel is in now--mostly setting, not so much action. Of course, this is only a temporary state for my novel; but I love your more unconventional idea. It sounds like you'll really be engaging the reader's mind.
