Sammy Sentra update: there's a mechanic literally a block from my apartment, so I stopped by today and they agreed to haul my car over and hook me up with an oil change while also giving him the once over for my little problem with him not starting and all. The verdict: I need a new battery and a new alternator. And for the low, low price of $500 ( Read more... )

I'd call you... but...

jesse says that's bullshit. He does a lot of work on his own cars. He can't imagine it being that much. It should cost you maybe half of that.

Who did you go to?

$500 for an alternator, battery, & oil change? no effing way :(

an oil change alone, w/ oil filter & possibly fuel filter = $40-60.

alternator alone (no labour, just part) $90-100.

battery alone (top shelf, no labour) $70-80.

so that's $200-240 without labour. labour SHOULD NOT be $250-300! especially since all that labour would take maybe 1-2 hours AT MOST. srsly, i've done all that myself on every vehicle i've owned.

Well, I don't know about an alternator, but a battery costs like fifty bucks and you could put it in yourself, in the parking lot of the car place, in five minutes, so whatever to paying for that.

Good luck with the brother, I'm sure it'll all be fine.

What everyone else says. You can do the battery yourself unless it's REALLy weirdly positioned in the SEntra. Alternator shouldn't be more than 2-300 including labor, I'm pretty sure. I think they're giving you a vagina markup.

If you go to Knecht's, they'll just put the battery in for you in the parking lot. It should be $80 TOPS and nobody should charge you to install a battery because even I can do that and I am way stupid. The shop is probably factoring in the cost of disposing of the old battery, since you (technically) can't just dump those anywhere you'd like (or off the roof of the penthouse). My dad or brother could probably do the alternator if you were to pick it up. They like cookies. Sun Automotive in Springfield is where I take the problematic Volvo, and I have never once been patronized or taken advantage of because of my X chromosomes. And they give you all sorts of coupons for free car washes and oil changes. Oh, and they have cookies.
