I take back *some* of the things I said about mainstream american big-name-company comics. Not everything! But some of it. I do NOT take back the comments about how most of them have the continuity of a shredded piece of kitten plagued string being woven by monkeys, or how because of this they can't write themselves out of wet paper sacks and the ( Read more... )

Mostly I find them by surfing through their favorites, because once you track down one artist in a style, chances are they'll have other artists in similar styles in their favorites links. Adam Warren's on there too, but I hate his work with a passion. =P Tim Townsend and diablo2003 are probably the main ones to go looking at.

After giving a casual perusal of all of those links, speciffically checking out how those artists handle sequentials all I gotta say is diablo2003 is the only one that's able to tell a cohesive story. His use of black and white shapes to make things clear is well executed... even if he did slip in halos here and there when he did black on black which is a no-no. I think it's.... Blaster Kid that did the Steampunk inks? There's a reason that book was a flop, the art is CRAZY ILLEGIBLE. X_X

I strongly reccomend picking up a copy of Scott McCloud's 'Understanding Comics' it's the text book for my major and is actually a graphic novel about comics and really breaks things down to better understand why artists do certain things. :>

Yeah, I liked some of the other things Blaster Kid did, but not the Steampunk stuff. But as he seems to be the inker, I attribute that more to what the penciler subjected him to than his personal style, as some of the other stuff was quite clear. =P I haven't been looking so much at the sequentials, though - I've got loads and loads of books on that, from how every genre tackles it (though I'll happily look up that one you recced as well!) but more at how they handle the actual ink in panels and pinups. That's the part I have the worst problem with - I'm ink phobic and will trace all these delicate little lines and end up with nothing having more emphasis than anything else and the whole thing looking blah. v_v

you've spotted mark brook's gallery, yeah? his group shot of x-men class of '06 still makes me go guh. even at my best, i sucked at group shots. the coloring actually did it justice, too. i haven't been crazy about some of his more recent posts, but he also does great dynamic shots with very detailed backgrounds AND i approve of some of his renderings of the ladies.

Yep! And yeah, he's on my top two list, along with Tim Townsend.

Though while mad crazy artists, some of those guys need to take a basic printing class. One of them - I'd have to hunt him down on devart, the print he had is up there, he's one of the upcoming 'just broke into the biz and starting to be steady' guys - brought the print into our store to make con prints. And just... dude. Kinko's prints on large copy machines. NO the colors are not going to match what you have on your screen at home. Get over it. Also? Your non-repro-blue pencil *will* show up on color copies. And if those bristol pages of pencils for DC are your livelihood, then take some responsibility for packing them before shipping them. We've got about three guys who do freelance work for Marvel and DC who come in regularly and none of them have clue one. I just want to smirk at them because maybe my art isn't as good as theirs, but at least I know how to work around the print end of the business.
