No spoilers here -- I won't divulge which Hogwarts faculty Hermione blows to get those grades!

May I say that I just don't get the Harry Potter thing?

I mean, OK, the first three books (I haven't read any since) were very cute. But come on, people! You'd think that, like, Robertson Davies rose from the dead to write a fourth volume in The Deptford Trilogy or something, from all the fuss. Yeesh! *shakes head ( Read more... )

I don't much get it either, although my problem is probably because I really didn't like the books. I tried very hard to get through the first three and then quit because I came to the conclusion that the problem wasn't on my end.

Gotta say,
I'd way rather read Harry Potter than a new Deptford anyday.

Now "Rebel Angels"...

I *loved* The Deptford Trilogy.

I love Robertson Davies and the Rebel Angels was also one of my favorites. But Harry Potter is just so much more *fun* to read. It's like comparing the amusement park to a really good dinner out. You can't go on the roller coaster all the time, but how can you *not* like the roller coaster?

That said, I'm annoyed with the way Rowling's taking the books. She invented this great universe and now she's fucking it up killing off everyone in HP's life unnecessarily. I've decided that after book 4, my oficial universe is Cassie's cause she's better at writing this stuff than Rowling. :p

It is completely necessary to kill of all the important people in Harry's life. He'd be a rather lousy "tragic hero" if there wasn't enough tragedy to keep him in that role! :)

I mean, starting him out as an abused orphan, left an orphan through his parents sacrificeing themselves to save him from the greatest evil out there, and then having everything go right for him? Nah. He needs the steady dose of "people will keep dying until YOU stop it, and you're the only one who can" so that he can do whatever he has to, be it sacrifice himself, his friends, or anything else dear to him, when it comes time that it's really just Voldemort and him and at least one of them has to die.

Sorry, I'll stop now.
