The Vatican has already said in several official communication that there is no I, and there will not be unless and until there is a Francis II.

Pope John Paul I got the I when his successor picked the same name. It's just that he was Pope for such a short time no one remembers that there was no I at the beginning.

I wasn't yet alert enough to pay attention in 1978; I was going by Uncle Wiki, which says He was ... the first pope to designate himself explicitly as "the first" with the name. But that cite seems to come from a 1985 source called "An investigation into the murder of Pope John Paul I", so maybe a grain of salt is in order. :-}

In any case the Monsignor has evidently not yet got the memo. Sigh.

I foresee lots and lots of mistakes. I was watching the Italian news saying the new pope was Pope Francis. I turn to CNN and they had a big sign Pope Francis I. So I won't hold my breath. LOL

Of course, you are entirely correct. I think it's probably well-meant ignorance -- not unlike clapping at the end of a symphonic movement. But I think it might be also put down to excitement about the name combined with surprise that it hasn't been used before. St. Francis is a very. very popular (and well-branded) saint, so I think part of this is "He's a Francis! the FIRST Francis, can you believe?"

Which doesn't make it any more correct, but you know I'm all about the subconscious motivations. :)
