Lady A Day 049: Nina Simone

Jun 18, 2010 12:06

There's not a single singer comparable to The High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone.  Fearless, commanding, honest human chronicler Nina Simone, who sang about the tough stuff and makes me cry like no other jazz or blues artist.  (read more at TheGoodFan)

Nina Simone! Haven't listened to her music in ages and I adore it. Thanks for reminding me *puts on the good stuff*

Re the pic, I'm as big a fan of the naked female form as anyone else, but is there any chance of a cut (or at least a warning) next time there's gonna be naked pictures please, chica? Granted it's completely my fault for checking LJ at work but whilst that's usually fine, I'm not sure I would have wanted to risk my boss walking up behind me at that point...

Naked pics behind a cut? If there is a next time I post the nude form, I'll consider it.

Okay, anyone that did a medley of songs from Hair gets 8 billion awesome points from me. Really, really good song choice combo too. A+.

This may be my favorite that you've posted. Nina Simone is one of the most poignant and prolific artists, because what she does truly is art, of our time. I love the nude image you chose as well. I don't believe I had ever seen it before. It is such a beautiful image and really subversive, given the social narratives surrounding Black bodies, especially Black women's bodies.

My favorite piece by her is Four Women. It was the first I had ever heard and still stands out even after all these years. This was awesome thanks for sharing.

Favorite Lady?! High praise for the High Priestess, then. :)

Nina is gorgeous, inside and out, and I thought the nude image so strong and tasteful and yes, statement-making about Black women and their bodies (in turn fetishized/underrepresented) that I had to include it. I like how it juxtaposes with the gown and heels image next to it, too.

Four Women is one of my all time favorites!!! Such masterful storytelling.
