I've been needing a jointer for the woodshop for quite a while now, to ensure that the edges on my pieces are truly square and sraight. That way, when I make glue-ups, they don't have "voids" in them that result in disasters like this one I blogged about last year ( Read more... )

Now you need a thickness planer to go with it.

I already have a thickness planer -- a 12" Makita. I wouldn't have been able to do as much as I have done without it.

It's great for making parallel surfaces, but doesn't help with squaring up the sides.

I got a jointer first. A little Delta 6" benchtop. I wish I had a longer one.

Always Joint first, that gives you a flat reference side for the planer.
