The traditional Southern Californian Santa Ana (or Santana) easterly dry desert winds started blowing in last night... and it did a really good job of drying out the air and adding allergens by replacing our normal westerly onshore flow ( Read more... )

When the wind changes direction and comes from inland instead of offshore, it blows all kinds of things into the area that aren't normally there... Plus, if you are having fires, the soot can definitely be causing problems.

No fires in the main part of San Diego county so far... (knock on wood) but 'tis the season for them. The red-flag warnings all went out last night as soon as the air dried up. During a red-flag warning, it's illegal here to have an uncovered fire (one that emits embers into the air) and there is a $2500 minimum fine for throwing a cigarette out of your car anywhere in the County. I like that second law... I wish it would be enforced more often, though.
