Yuletide in summer for Asian media fandoms: y/n?

May 06, 2011 00:07

So, there's this new small Asian fandom exchange thing (DW mirror) and I'm sort of tempted to participate.

It's like Yuletide except it's in summer and it's for Asian media. Which doesn't mean just Janime and manga, so one could enter, say, Korean manhwa and Chinese dramas. I know there are people on my flist who follow Chinese and Korean dramas, ( Read more... )

So, it's like people name some rare fandoms and then somebody volunteers to write fics for a fandom of their choice? Sounds kind of cool, actually :D

From what I've understood from my Yuletide lurkings, first people name fandoms and a list is made of those. From that list every participant can choose four fandoms and make requests for them (one request/fandom). Then they name at least four fandoms they can write for. Then they get four requests from someone else, sent by the mod, and at least one of those requests is from a fandom they volunteered to write for.

Like, you make requests for fandoms A, B, C and D and volunteer to write for those (or something else) and E & F. Then you get someone's four request: three of them might be Z, X and Q, but one is definitely a fandom you're willing to write for (A-F).

To make it more mysterious, you know who you're writing for, but you don't know who writes for you. XD The big reveal happens a week or so after the stories are posted.

And about the requests: fandom, character(s), anything else. The author has to write something for the fandom and the character you named, and while everything else is technically optional, only a total ( ... )

Lol, it does sound kind of complicated... The fandom naming part and the volunteering part, at least XDD

But writing 500 words doesn't seem to be all that much, I'm thinking of participating...

Although I don't think that Gintama is not an active fandom ^_^

And Saiyuki is pretty active too, I think...

It's not active if you compare it to, for example, Pandora Hearts which was already nominated. Pandora Hearts has over 2 000 fics on ff.net alone while Gintama has only about 650. So yeah, I think it's good to go if people are interested. ;D

Saiyuki has over 7 000 while Yu Yu Hakusho, which was also nominated already, has... over 23 000. o.O

Lol, I suppose I just don't know Pandora Hearts, so it seems like a small fandom to me.

Yu Yu Hakusho is an older series, right? Maybe that's why it was nominated...

The idea sounds great, but I have to admit I have little belief in its success. The fandoms are rare for a reason and even if all the people participating are interested in rare fandoms in general, there is no guarantee that any of them shares yours and even less that they would choose to write about it. I looked at what had been requested so far and there was not that many people requesting and I didn't know most of the fandoms, only a few classic books and manga/anime that already have considerable fandoms (Yu Yu Hakusho etc). But I did see a few dramas I know of on the DW mirror. Despite my pessimism I would consider participating if I could actually make myself write. Even 500 words have proved unmanageable of late. :( I see that someone has requested Fuurin Kazan. It would be interesting to see if anyone writes it.

That's quite true. :/ I've kept an eye on both the LJ and DW posts, and there are only a few fandoms I know. I think there might a lot more if the mod would advertise the community, but I've only seen it promoted on DW. I guess one option is for people to comment with interesting fandoms and then when you can actually sign-up, post to the relevant communities saying that the fandom in question is an option and btw, would anyone like to play? I'm still considering nominating a few fandoms, but we'll see about that.

Maybe you could approach it as a series of five drabbles? That's my back-up plan if I really do sign-up. If I won't be able to write a 500 words short fic, I'll write five drabbles with a common theme, whatever that is.

I don't know any relevant communities for the fandoms I have in mind. It's quite strange, there are a lot of people subbing and enjoying Asian dramas, but I haven't seen much of a fandom anywhere. Do you know whether the lj and dw mirrors work separately or they share the prompts? It would be a pity if your prompt is never picked up because you posted it into the wrong comm.

I'll think about it, maybe I'll participate after all.

That really is strange. You'd think there'd at least be a forum or something with active members.

I hadn't even thought about that. I think it'd be logical if the prompts were shared between them, but then again, I don't see a link to the mirror on either community. Something worth asking about, maybe.
