Maybe what needs to happen is those guys need to say that when Dave is around, loud enough that he can hear them. I know when I hear other guys compliment my wife, it often makes me think, "Damn right, she IS hot

I totally get you with the whole boyfriend vs random guy. I wish that too a lot :(
