A few days ago, I was talking to a friend of mine about my life as a polyamorous person. He's monogamous, but this wasn't a coming out conversation so much as sharing my life experiences with a good friend. He usually has questions about what it is that I do, and I answer them as frankly as I can- there's no point in trying to dress things up. ( Read more... )

"Aren't you just taking time away from A?"

He's assuming that she can stand you for that long. *runs and ducks for cover*

The way I figure it, my relationship is my business. As long as it works for me and my partner(s) then why should it matter to anyone else. And I agree that neither is any better than the other, except when it comes to personal preferences. No two individuals are ever alike, so why would people assume that every relationship between individuals must meet the same criteria.

Exactly.

It's understandable, in a way. our culture assumes monogamy to the degree that everyone assumes that they know what the word means and what a monogamous relationship should be, so they don't talk about it or think about it. And further, our culture reinforces the idea that monogamy = purity = nobility, and that promiscuity = impurity = wrongness. He might not even be able to see the problems with these assumptions.

Yesterday, we had a similar conversation about BDSM. I laugh, because it beats crying.
