Forbidden Forest, June 9th

It was cool and pleasant in the trees after suffering through the heat of a Hogsmeade afternoon. Rita had not wanted to go into the Three Broomsticks or the Hog's Head, though there were surely valuable sources about the Hogwarts scandals in both those establishments; Rosmerta hadn't been acting quite like herself lately, evading Rita's friendly ( Read more... )

Fenrir had a sharp stone he'd picked up but he hadn't had one second when there were less than two Centaurs with him at any particular time.

His anger was building with each passing night, as the moon grew. He was just so angry with Remus, with Lucius, with himself, with everyone.

Someone would get themself killed, sooner or later.

Transforming from her beetle form back into her well-groomed, lively self, Rita took a moment to smooth her hair and clothes before approaching. She could smell the werewolf before she saw him -- he was looking rather unkempt, and she wondered when he had last had a bath, yet there was something unmistakably virile and charismatic about him.

"Hello, Fenrir," she said brightly. "Rita Skeeter, The Daily Prophet. Visiting friends?"

He leapt backwards in a reflex flight reaction as the woman appeared from seemingly nothing. The Centaurs lowered their swords but seemed to recognise her.

Fenrir had to think about it, the face was familiar but he didn't twig who it was until she spoke.

Journalist. Oh great. Just what he needed for Voldemort to take his revenge on an idiot who got himself captured.

"Go. Away." He growled.

She gave him her most charming smile. Surely a brute like that couldn't be as disinterested as he sounded. Was he a prisoner of these centaurs or in league with them? Did it mean that Voldemort now had the Centaurs working for him! What an article that would make!

"There are stories that you escaped during the raid on Azkaban," she pressed, sounding admiring. "Was it the Ministry you were running from, or the Death Eaters who brought you there? How do you feel about the Ministry's latest actions?"

After an hour of tripping over roots and crashing around in the dark like a wounded bull, Walden was ready to jack the whole sorry mission in and retreat back to headquarters, with or without the mangy werewolf.

Dolohov's charm kept their progress (or rather, lack of it) unheard, which proved to be a minor blessing - Walden's tirade of abuse cut off by an urgent 'shh!' and a hand on his arm, pulling him back.

...Voices?

A few more steps brought a clearing into view, and there was Greyback, surrounded by centaurs, of all creatures, and talking to...was that the news hag? Why in the world was he talking to her?

Curious as this was, the woman was none of Dolohov's concern. The entire wizarding world already knew they were out. What more could she do?

Their goal was to retrieve Greyback. Alive. That was what they would do. Nothing more and nothing less.

Still mostly obscured by a tree, Dolohov nodded at Macnair and aimed a Stunning spell at Greyback. He knew that wouldn’t be enough to take the man down, but they had to start somewhere.

The moment the spell shot from the cover of the trees, Rita shrieked, dropped to the ground and transformed. Greyback's story could wait. Who was attacking: the Death Eaters? The Ministry? Buzzing softly, she crept in the darkness beneath the leaves to listen.

The hex smacked into his arm and he roared with anger. He went to run forward but the Centaurs reared up in front of him, blocking him from attacking anyone. Rita had dissapeared.

Snarling, he shouted across the clearing. "You can tell him, I'll come back when I'm good and ready and not before. I'm not his servant!"

There was no-one behind him. No Death Eaters, no Centaurs, no Ministry.

He fled.
