Fabric/filling suggestions?

Hey guys.  I don't want to clog up f-lists, so here goes:  I want to make a sleep mask.  Due to insane work schedules and m body hating me, I am sleeping during the day a lot more than I used to, and therefore need a mask to block out the sun.  I know that darker colors=more blockage, so I'll probably do this with a black back fabric at least.

Linen, perhaps?
(My mom had linen sheets, and whenever I was sick and fevery, I'd curl up in her bed because it was cooler.)

That's a good suggestion...I hadn't thought of it. I'm poor and cheap so I tend toward cotton fabrics, but for a project this small, I don't mind spenind a touch more to get what I need. Thanks :).

linen might be a little scratchy round the eyes. but natural fibres are definitely what you need. Silk would probably work best, but a soft cotton, or hemp might work well too.

I'll keep that in mind and be sure to test for scratchiness :). Thanks!

The problem with your satin mask is not the weave of the fabric (satin), it's that it's always, inevitably, cheap polyester satin. Cotton sateen (satin-woven cotton) or silk satin would breathe just fine.

make sure your filler/quilting fabric is a breathable natural fabric as well. Having polyester batting or any layers of the eye mask made of non-breathable fabric will cause the whole thing to heat up.

I use cotton batting for cloth pads (I make those homemade as well) but I got a tip in another comm that she uses flax seed to fill hers...and she seconded a linen recommendation. I love the flax seed idea.

1 there is such a thing as cotton satin but it is hard to find an probaby realy pricey so ony if you get lucky.
2 any cosmetic and drug stores carry gel masks that you can cool in your icebox or freezer for things like swollen puffy eyes and stuff. if you make yourself a black terrycloth sort of envelope for it so you can wash it out
(or make 2, one on , one drying) every day as you stick the mask in the fridge when you get up... might could work.
3 there is such a thing as black terry cloth.i used to have a husband who insisted on black towels only. don't ask but we ain't married no more
4 if you go for plain stuffed mask, there is such a thing as cotton quilt batting,it even comes in dark, it is made by the company called "Pure and Natural" and is usually available at Joann's fabrics.you can buy as little as an 1/8 of a yard which , cine it is very wide would give you enough cotton breathable batting to layer on top of each other and make several masks
hope this helps honey

Hahaha...I have black towels as well! But that's because my bathroom is done all in black and white, and me and white towels do not get along so well...lol.

Thanks for the suggestions!
