A forgotten SKU (almost) fanfic of mine.

Mar 14, 2008 22:20

The story of my online life is that if there is a job (or a need for a job) that requires service to an online community through numbers (counting votes, counting posts, or running polls) I invariably either take the job, have the job given to me, or create it myself.  When I was a regular participant on alt.fan.utena, the organizing ritual was the monthly stats post.  It listed the top threads and posters along with the posts/day and top crossposted groups.  For the first two years, the stats were collected and posted by a bot.  Sometimes, that bot would malfunction, and I took it upon myself to post the stats myself.  One day, the bot just disappeared, and I compiled the stats manually and posted them until May 2006.  I then moved and didn't get Internet access until July 2006, missing the May and June stats.  By time I returned, the group had collapsed, as the ritual of the stats posts had disappeared and most people moved on to the "In the Rose Garden" forums on ohtori.nu.  That certainly told me after the fact that my contribution was needed!

In any event, here is my first stats report, told in the form of a fanfic.  In case you're wondering, I actually was a secretary for a shell collecting club and kept its minutes for a year.  I know exactly what Miki's job is.

Minutes of the Ohtori Academy Student Council for December 2003

Part One.

Cue organ and orchestra playing our favorite "elevator music".

Doors close on an empty elevator.  After passing the first floor, the
silhouette of TOUGA lounging against one of the walls of the elevator
appears.

Touga: So, another month has passed while we wait for The End of the
World to decide who will bring the world revolution.  (Elevator passes
the second floor, and the silhouette of MIKI seated at a desk
appears).  What has happened during that month?

Miki (clicks his stopwatch):  Sempai, the following topics were
discussed during this month, in reverse chronological order:

The elevator passes another floor, and the silhouette of SAIONJI
appears, lounging against the wall opposite TOUGA.

Saionji:  What, no numbers of posts for each thread?

Miki:  Sorry, Sempai, the usual method of recording numbers of
responses and ranking them doesn't seem to be working.  I could spend
hours doing it by hand, but then we'd never get *this* month's
business done.

Saionji: Hmph!

The elevator passes the final floor and the silhouettes of JURI and
NANAMI appear.

Juri:  Is there any other way to get the numbers of posts for each
topic?

The Student Council members now appear on the balcony overlooking the
courtyard and duelling arena.

Miki:  Well, Sempai, we can wait until March 1st, when Biff Standard's
recording system will have them.

Nanami: I, for one, can't wait that long for my brother's greatness in
December to be announced!

Miki:  Or, I can read the minutes and allow them to be amended before
they are accepted.

Touga:  Miki, proceed.  What about the people who posted.

Miki clicks his stopwatch again: That can be done by hand more
quickly.  One minute please (clicks stopwatch ON!)

Miki clicks stopwatch off:  That looks fairly complete, other than all
the cross-posters on one particular thread started by someone we all
dislike!

Nanami turns up her nose:  Oh *her*!

Juri:  Yes, Galaxy Freulein Bad Karma.  She gives girl power a bad
name.

Saionji grins evilly:  Perhaps I should smack her around.

Touga:  I move we strike Saio's remarks from the minutes.

Juri:  Seconded!

Saionji:  Hmph!  I withdraw my suggestion.

Touga:  Speaking of crossposts, what other groups appeared on the
newsgroups line?

Miki:  In that one thread, rec.arts.anime.misc, rec.arts.anime.fandom,
 alt.fan.sailor-moon, japan.anime.evangelion, and demon.local.

Touga:  Other than demon.local, all the usual suspects, except for all
the alt.fan.u... groups.

Miki:  Sempai, the method I use won't pick those posts up.  That
method cancels those posts and refuses to archive them.

Touga:  I see that there are advantages to your system.

Namami:  I won't eat Spam at the school dining room.  I certainly
won't eat it at a student council meeting, either!

Touga:  Posts per day?

Miki:  Sorry, that would take too long.  I can come back and amend
them in 2 months when Biff Standard's system catches up.

Touga:  Very well then.  The minutes have been read.  I move that the
minutes be accepted as read.  Do I hear a second?

Juri:  Seconded.

Touga:  Very well, the motion has been made and seconded for the
minutes to be approved as read.  Time for a vote!  All in favor?  All
opposed?

Student council turns their heads and looks through the fourth wall,
at YOU, gentle readers of alt.fan.utena!

snAFU's Assistant Secretary

Part Two

This should be one of my final tasks as snAFU's Assistant Secretary for
2003-2004, so long as "The Mighty Quin" does his job!

Cue organ and orchestra playing our favorite "elevator music".

Doors close on an empty elevator.  After passing the first floor, the
silhouette of TOUGA lounging against one of the walls of the elevator
appears.

Touga: So, Miki, it's now March.  Did we ever get a final report from Biff
Standard's system about the official stats for December?  (Elevator passes
the second floor, and the silhouette of MIKI seated at a desk appears).

Miki (clicks his stopwatch):  Yes, sempai, the system updated on schedule
and I was able to retrieve the information.  Here is Biff Standard's report
for December 2003:

Saionji:  Well, that's much better!  Now we know who's on top!

The elevator passes the final floor and the silhouettes of JURI and
NANAMI appear.

Juri:  Yes, a troll thread.

Saionji:  Oops!  I told you I should have slapped her around!

(Everyone shoots Saio a dirty look)

Touga: Remember, slapping women around is how you got us into the current
situation.

Nanami (looks over at Miki's list): Ugh, naked women and make money fast!
What degenerates!  I'm glad you didn't include those in the minutes!

Touga:  Yes, there are worse things than trolls.  It's a wonder sometimes
that we get any work done around here at all with all of that solicitation.
It should be prohibited on school grounds!

The Student Council members now appear on the balcony overlooking the
courtyard and duelling arena.

Touga:  Miki, proceed.  What about the people who posted?

Sempai, I did receive one comment on the original roster: "This list, BTW,
will look very different if/when Mike Quin posts his version because I decided not to
include all the crossposters from raam and demon.local (trolls!) in the
count.

Nanami:  I see some names you didn't read.

Miki: One time only spammers and trolls.  Since you won't eat Spam and think
trolls are ugly, I don't think you'll object to leaving them off the roster.

Nanami:  Oh, *those* are the degenerates!  Gladly!

Juri:  I see that Biff Standard orders his lists by days active, not number
of posts.  I'd like to see what that list looks like when it's ordered by
posts, like the usual rosters in the minutes.

Miki (clicks his stopwatch): That may take some time.

Saonji: You just want to see Sephigirl on top.

Juri: In more ways than one. ~_^

Touga: Ahem.  Juri, do you wish to make a motion?

Juri: Yes, I move that Miki submit a revised roster of posters ordered by
the number of posts.

Saionji: Seconded.

Touga: All in favor?

All: AYE!

Touga: Motion passes.  Miki, what about the other newsgroups?

Miki: Sempai, the same ones as in the last report, rec.arts.anime.misc 63
21.1 %, rec.arts.anime.fandom 62 20.8 %,  japan.anime.evangelion 62 20.8 %,
alt.fan.sailor-moon 62 20.8 %, and demon.local 50 16.8 %.

Touga: Posts per day?

Miki:  I'll submit that with the re-ordered roster.

Touga:  Thank you, Miki.  Looking forward to your amended and final report.
Any other business?

All: ...

Touga: Very well, then. This meeting is adjourned!

Part 3

Cue procession music.

The Ohtori Student Council are already seated on the balcony overlooking the
campus, blissfully unaware of the Ohtori Academy Gymnastics team practicing
around them.  Among them is recent transfer student Kotachi Kuno, fresh from
St. Heberake High School, who is busily perfecting her rhythmic gymnastics
routine with her trademark ribbon.

Touga:  Miki, do you have the revised roster of participants ready?

Miki clicks his stopwatch:  Yes, Sempai.  It is as follows:

1 40 Sephigirl (44 including yahoo.com posts)
  2 29 Death Quaker
  3 28 Jiras Corrino
  4 21 Kevin Trainor

Miki: You're welcome, Sempai.

Juri: I see the trolls and cross-posters were very busy at the end of the
month.  No wonder things were quiet in January.  We were exhausted!

Saionji: Bloody Vikings!

Nanami: And Galaxy Freulein Bad Karma, with assistance of Elf Snowmega and
the trolls on demon.local!  Hmph!

Touga: Does anyone else wish to make any further comments on the amended
minutes for December?

All shake their heads: .....

Touga:  Yosh!  Therefore, I move that the minutes be accepted as read and
amended.

Saionji: Seconded.

Touga: All in favor?

All: AYE!

Touga: Motion approved and meeting adjouned!

Saionji suddenly notices that the gymnastics team is practicing around him
and becomes enraptured by Kodachi Kuno.  Touga notices Saionji's fascination
and catches his attention.

Touga: Leave that one alone.  I hear Mikage's interested in her.

Saionji: Kuso!

Touga and Saionji follow the rest of the Student Council to the elevator.
