Of course there's an irony in this in that Mexico had a non-white leader when the United States was having a civil war over whether black people would or would not be seen as property. I think that Obama being black is the primary motivator of the Tea Party, but to be blunt no US President in 2009 would have an easy time of it. The combination of wars that are unwinnable and refusal on either side at present to actually leave and concede to reality plus the return of certain older economic blocs to wealth and power plus the real wage stagnation as a ticking time bomb

I had to do a bit of research in response, as I remembered the Mexican leader during the Civil War being Emperor Maximillian. He was only there for two years at the end of the Civil War. The legitimate leader was Benito Juarez. Thanks to you, I learned something today.
Yep. For additional trivia points that's who Benito Mussolini was named after.
I find that statistic worth citing whenever people talk about American exceptionalism. There's only been one Indigenous American Veep where Mexico had an Indigenous American leader in the 1860s. And of course South America also had an Asian-American political leader who's more than a little notorious while the USA has just elected its first black President two years ago.
