New York Magazine: The Dow Closed At 11005.97 Today!

Today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 11000 for the first time since September 2008. Who's afraid to say the recession's over, now? Oh, still everyone.

It can take up to two years for the NBER to determine the date a recession is over.

IMO the recession will be deemed to have ended in Q3 2009, though I think what's really happening is that the wealthy are doing *so* well their numbers are skewing the entire economic portrait to look like contraction has ended, when for almost all of us, the recession is still, in practical terms, going on.

I've seen it suggested that instead of counting recessions by GDP, we should be looking at GDI.
