Last installment of the closing of excess tabs and windows for today--two links that are about Detroit, or rather what the city means to the rest of the country.

First, the Good.

For more than 24 hours, 2010 Detroit Auto Show: The ladies of NAIAS was the most popular story on the Detroit edition of the Examiner.com. Gee, I wonder why.

What's really sad about things with Detroit is that to me, at least, much of what goes on with it is a lot of hand-wringing and tear-shedding but precious little actual shit getting done. It in a way typifies what Nebs said about Haiti a while back....

Outsiders, as a group, aren't going to do shit to help Detroit, and the locals have figured this out. Watching the Senate turn down the bailout that the Bush Administration proposed just cemented that awareness for many. Instead, Detroiters have figured out that they'll have to do it all themselves.

As for Haiti, I don't suppose you read bradhicks? If you don't, you should. He has a great rant about Haiti, some of which applies to Detroit as well.

I hope they can do it. On the other hand, Somaliland has been a viable and effective peacefully governed state run by Somalis for quite some time now and nobody really cares about them.

No, I don't, but I will check it out. I do like what bits I've read of his journal, though.
