It seems as though Joxur's still peeing on the carpet. The vet didn't really find anything last time other than a mild bladder infection. I'm wondering if it's because I haven't been able to completely clean it up, so he can still smell it and thinks that's a place to go. I've tried using vinegar, and I'm going to get some Bitter Apple tomorrow and ( Read more... )

If he keeps returning to the same spots, you can try putting down furniture on those spots so he can't get at them, or plastic cat play centers or those plastic rug protectors for higher transportation areas that need to be more passable for humans. Might help break the habit.

You can use a black light to scan for cat urine spots, btw, so you know exactly what areas to cover.

Ooh, yes--I'll try that. Thanks!

Have you tried any of the enzyme-based cleaners on that spot in the rug?

Saturate the spot and that should get any residual urine odor that makes him think that spot's okay for urination.

Alternately, can you temporarily put a litterbox in that spot? Once the kitten gets used to that, gradually move it from that place to where you want the litterbox to go.

We finally got Boopsie to stop pissing on our clothes/laundry by giving her a new litterbox filled not with litter, but with shop-rags we bought at Costco. She preferred to piss on fabric over litter, we gave her some fabric it was acceptable to piss on. She still craps in the regular litter, but this has mostly eliminated the pissing problem.

I tried something called "Urine-Off", and I thought it was working, but I must have missed some spots.

*hugs* Thanks. Of course, right after I posted this he was being all cute, and I'm reminded why I have him, even if he's a big fat furry pain in the ass.

We've had the same problem with our cats in the past couple of months, except ours are also pooping on the carpet, too. Yeah, big fun. The only thing we've found to be effective is a combination of keeping the litter boxes /immaculate/ (we also switched to a more expensive clumping brand that does a better job of keeping the pee smell out of the boxes), cleaning the carpets frequently (we use regular carpet cleaner, then enzyme stuff, then vinegar) and moving the furniture around.

So far, it's working. I just hope it's not a temporary fix. Good luck!

I'll give you some stuff next time I see you. It's called Ex-Stink, a non-toxic mineral powder. After you clean the rug in the usual way [with Nature's Miracle or something similar], sprinkle the area with Ex-Stink and wait about two weeks. It doesn't work fast, but it works.

Cats pee outside of the litterbox for many different reasons. They don't like the cat litter, or the box location, or the mat you put by it. It's not private enough. Or it's too small. Heh. And long-haired cats are more likely to pee randomly than short-haired cats. And then there are many medical reasons, such as FUS.

I recommend a book called "Think Like A Cat." The picture on the cover is frightening, but it's a good book about solving cat behavior problems without going nuts yourself.

Really? Hmm...

Long haired cats seem to be less bright than short haired cats. I believe you described Joxur as "dumb as a bag of hammers." *g*
