Reavers weren’t people. They were demons. Everyone seemed to have a hard time trying to believe either one of those facts were true, but they were. They were people possessed by demons. Miranda had been poisoned, and that poison opened up the gates of hell, releasing the souls trapped inside. It had become harder to get out since there was no one place in the universe anymore. But they could still remember, the demons could still remember what it was like, to feel the sun on their skin, to have homes…Earth. They took the rage and poison of Miranda and used it to walk again. No one was a good person anymore. They slaughtered the planet and escaped the Alliance. It was easy, they killed and destroyed with nothing to loose, healing themselves, making them look invincible. They were invincible. However…

There were still some demons who felt human, felt sorry for them, even after all those years of pain and rage and suffering and realizing what a bitch it was being human, when you knew you were now just so much better than that. They left first, finding bodies that, damn, looked just like their old ones, and they figured, God must have gotten tired of being creative and now he’s reusing old blueprints. They could be bitter, they earned it.

It was people like Sam, he still knew who he was. He’d always known who he was, it just never really settled into his conscious until the pit swallowed him whole. He was one of those that had followers, like Ruby. Only she choose to leave him, perusing whatever red headed ambition she had acquired. It probably involved sex and deception, she was so good at that. Sam found a meat sack like his old one surprisingly quickly on a planet called Persephone.

It wasn’t difficult blending in. The people now were just like the people then, crazy, angry and unaware of the dangers at night. Of course, now there were more. He walked through what he assumed was a port, watching spaceships (oh the irony) dock in and fly out. He didn’t realize the lazy, almost hopeful grin spread across his face as he stared up at the sky.

“You look like you need a ride,” Sam looked around, his smile staying lazily on his face as he spotted a girl sitting in front of a (pile of shit) ship with the word Serenity painted across it. He took a step forward, giving her a once over. Her smile lit up her face and her rainbow umbrella twirled in her hands over her shoulder.

“A ride to where?” he asked. It had been so long since he used a voice. It felt almost nice, it sounded so much like his own. The girl shrugged and stared up lovingly at the ship, reminding him of his brother…

“Anywhere,” she said, looking back at him. “Wherever it is, my Serenity can get you there.”

“Serenity, huh?” repeated Sam. His smile matched hers, his face lighting up just like hers. He watched her look away for a second and then back up at him.

“Of course, you’ll have to pay,” she said nervously. “You can pay, right?”

Sam thought for a moment. He could pay, he could pay for passage and food for a year. He pulled out the money clip in his pocket, the initials J.C. staring back at him, then looked back up at her, quirking an eyebrow.

“Will this do?” he asked her, feeling a bit like his father. Her eyes widened slightly.

“Boy,” she breathed, nodding at him speechlessly. She swallowed and nodded back into the ship. “You got any luggage…?”

“Sam, and I don’t need any,” he said, stuffing on of his hands in his pockets and walking closer to her. He looked around her into the ship. It was a Firefly, the thought made him smirk. It would be just like hunting again. Thieving, hiding, running…perfect.

“Well, welcome aboard,” said Kaylee. “Dinner ain’t for another couple ‘o hours, but I ‘spect the rest of the crew ‘ll be happy to meet you. ‘Sepcially River, if you don’t mind…well, you’ll meet everyone soon enough.”

Sam gave her a look, to which she ignored as she spotted what looked like a mule heading towards them. Sam shook his head and continued into the cargo bay, giving it a better look around now that his eyes had adjusted to the dark. It was still a piece of crap…

“Ah, you must be one of the new passengers,” Sam looked up to see a smartly dressed man walking down towards him from the level above. Sam gave him a slight wave.

“Sam Winchester,” he said before he could stop himself, the girl outside had caught him off guard with all her cheerfulness.

“Simon Tam,” said the man, hopping off the last step and holding out his hand for Sam to shake, which he did. The name sounded familiar… “I’m the ships medical doctor.”

Click. “Nice to meet you, Simon,” said Sam carefully. Research always had been his strong point. Doctor Simon Tam, brilliant doctor with a future ahead of him. Tyen-shiao duh why he had disappeared from the galaxy, but there he was, standing right in front of him with a smile on his face.

“I’m sure you’ll get the tour from Kaylee later,” he said, nodding towards the dock where the girl with the umbrella had been sitting, but was now helping a blonde man in a Hawaiian t-shit (good lord of all the things to keep around…) load something mechanical off the mule and into the ship. Turning back to Simon he suppressed a smirk as the other man continued to stare a Kaylee.

“Is she always that happy?”

“Kaylee is a buck full o’ sunshine,” Sam turned again as a different man made his way up to them, giving Simon a nod and Sam a once over. “Mal Reynolds, I’m the captain of this ship. You ridin’ with us?”

“Cap, this is Sam,” said Kaylee, leaving the blonde man with the machinery and walking up to the trio of men standing just inside the ship. Kaylee stopped at Sam’s shoulder and looked up at him brightly. “He ain’t got nothing better to do but to come with us!”

“How fascinating,” said Mal, not really caring in the least, and Sam didn’t blame him. “Kaylee, have you gotten that damn compression coil fixed?”

“No, not exactly-”

“I told you to get that thing fixed.”

“Well, it ain’t really a turn a few knobs and everything’s shiny kind of deal, Captain. We need a new one.”

“Will it work?”

“She’ll fly.”

“Then let’s go!” shouted Mal, moving past Simon and Sam, who was just bemused.

“Boo yao ming duh da-shiang,” muttered Kaylee under her breath. “No wonder Inara left.”

“I’ll show you to you’re room,” said Simon, patting Sam on the shoulder and beckoning him to follow. He did, glancing back at Kaylee who still looked a mite upset. He followed Simon, making note of every passage and every room. It was fairly tight, no way something sinister would get in or out without a fight. He wanted to make sure that no harm came onto these nice people because of him, even if they were criminals. Didn’t matter to him, so was he.
