Sam heard his name being called and choose to ignore it. He was content with his eyes closed, ignoring the day around him. He managed to make out Dean’s voice as well as Jayne’s before someone hit him in the face, jolting him awake. He sputtered, feeling somewhat offended, and blinked angrily up at his grinning brother.

“Jerk.”

“Bitch,” Dean shot back, just like old times and patted Sam’s cheek. “Rise and shine, Sammy.”

“Where’s your gorram girlfriend?” asked Jayne. “We ain’t seen her all mornin’.”

“Probably with Kaylee,” said Sam, sitting up and giving his brother a look. “What’s got you in such a good mood?”

“Got a case,” said Dean, turning and walking out of the room, with Jayne looking confused. Sam stared after him, slightly in shock before flinging off the blankets over him and following Dean. He caught up with Dean in the bar, leaning against the counter, watching Mal and Zoë converse quietly on the other side of the bar.

“Dean,” called Sam loudly, his bare feet padding along the ground. “You have a case? What case?”

“Vampire nest,” said Dean brightly, picking up a folder behind him, earning the attention of Mal, Zoë, Simon and Inara who walked into the bar. Sam, crossed the room, taking the folder out of Dean’s hands and flipping it open.

“Vampires?” Jayne repeated out loud. “Ain’t that a little too fictiony for you normal folk?”

“What makes you think we’re taking this case?” asked Sam, ignoring Jayne and looking over the file carefully, missing the frown Dean gave him.

“Because you’re back, that’s why,” snapped Dean, straightening up and crossing his arms over his chest. “I’ve wasted enough time looking for your sorry ass, now we’re going to do some good old fashion selflessness.”

“Yeah, killing vampires is totally selfless,” said Sam, closing the file and dropping it on the counter. “Get Jo to go with you. I’m not going.”

“Damn it, Sam, don‘t be such a bitch?!” snapped Dean. “You acted like a smartass to dad until the day he died and now you’re treating me the same.”

“You’re not dad,” hissed Sam. “No matter how much you want to be, you’re not.”

“No shit, Sam-”

“Stop acting like it,” snapped Sam, turning on his heel and heading back to his room to put on proper clothes.

“This is about that girl of yours,” said Dean, causing Sam to stop in his tracks. “That’s it, isn’t it? What is so god damn special about that girl that you’ll ditch me all over again?”

“She was right,” said Sam, feeling tears well up in his eyes. “You’re broken,” he whispered to himself, shaking his head slowly. “And she’s taking me back.”

“What are you babbling about, Sam?” asked Dean angrily. Sam turned, shaking his head at his brother.

“You’re my brother, Dean,” said Sam. “And I’d die for you, but I wont stay here and watch you die.”

He turned back around and headed for the room in the back, closing the door slowly, staring at the ground.

“You should tell him about her,” Sam felt his heart jump, his head snapping up to see River sitting cross-legged on the bed. He frowned at her, picking his shirt up off the ground and shoving it over his head.

“About who?” he asked offhandedly, looking around for his boots.

“Our baby,” said River softly. Sam froze halfway between bending over to pick up one of his missing boots. He grabbed it and straightened up, giving River a look.

“I’m not going to kill him before the hell hounds do.”

“It won’t kill him.”

“It’ll kill him if I’m lucking, if not I’m the dead one,” River smiled at him, getting into a standing position on the bed and placing her hands on his shoulders. She pulled him closer to her and kissed him gently on the mouth.

“He should know about your daughter,” said River against his lips. Sam nodded after a moment and lowered his head, pressing his forehead against her chest.

“He’s going to kill me,” he muttered, wrapping his arms around River’s waist. “You got my back if he tries to kill me, right?”

“Nope,” Sam groaned and turned away, staring at the door behind him as if it were something unpleasant.

“River, I know we don’t talk about her,” started Sam, still staring at the door. “You hate me for not doing anything to protect her. I want you to know that I never… I never wanted to…”

Sam trailed off, looking back at River who placed her hand on his cheek.

“Don’t be such a girl,” she said , giving him a look and jumping off the bed. Sam stared after her, looking amused and offended.

“You did not just call me a girl,“ said Sam, shaking his head at River as she headed for the door. “Here I am apologizing for being a jerk and you’re calling me a girl.”

River stopped at the door, waiting for Sam to catch up to her before turning around and placing her hands on his stomach.

“You’re not a jerk,” she said softly, pulling him closer to her. He stared down at her, his fingers brushing against her waist. “Dong ma? You’re hurt and angry-”

“I want you to know that I’m sorry,” he said softly, interrupting her. River rolled her eyes at him and patted his chest encouragingly.

“Fang-sheen just go.”
