Simon had only run this fast three times in his life. Once when he was breaking out River, once running from Reavers, and the third time was because he ripped his pants and he really wanted to get home. This time, however, he was looking for Mal. Of all the times he couldn’t find the captain, it had to be this one. Simon skidded to a halt, looking backwards into the kitchen and spotting Mal sitting at the table. He lost his footing as he tried to stop and fell flat on his back. Mal looked up with a frown after hearing a smack and a groan come from the hallway.

“Doc?” he called in concern. Simon ignored the pain (and the consequence of a bruise on his tailbone) and scrambled to his feet, jogging into the kitchen.

“Mal, she’s gone,” said Simon breathlessly, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. The look on Mal’s face went from concern to horror.

“WHAT!?”

“Sam and River are already looking for her, Mal, but she’s not in the infirmary.”

Mal stared at Simon for a long time before pushing his chair back and standing up. “I need you to tell Zoë,” said Mal, turning and heading in the opposite direction Simon had come from. “Tell her to get Kaylee and Jayne to look in every single room. We’re gonna find that gorram girl.”

.

Sam was standing on the floor of the cargo bay, watching River who was staring up at the ceiling, turning around slowly in a circle. He was slightly captivated by the way she moved, her dress moving around her thighs as she turned. Sam torn his gaze away from her and looked at the boxes stacked up in the cargo hold.

“If I were a little girl, where would I be?” he muttered to himself. He imagined Dean making fun of him for that statement, something like ‘Wait, you mean you’re not? I got you that baton for nothing!’.

“Playing hide and seek,” said River softly from where she was standing. Sam looked back at her. She pointed at one of the compartments Mal used to store valuable things and looked over at Sam. He frowned and looked from the compartment to River, who gave him a look.

Sam took a breath and started forward, contemplating on pulling his gun. He restrained himself, but braced himself for anything. Squatting down next to the compartment he paused, looking back at River (who had put her hand down and was not just staring at him in anticipation) for confirmation and slide open the door.

The minute it opened Emmy started screaming, in turn making River scream. Sam flinched, and slowly turned his head to look back at River, giving her the same look she gave him. After a minute of screaming River stopped, and soon Emmy did too.

Her breathing was rapid and when Sam looked back at her she scooted further back into the compartment, her bare feet scraping against the ground. Sam moved closer to her, which only helped in making her whimper, wrapping her arms around her knees. Above them the others rushed in, stopping at the stair case to watch.

“Hey,” said Sam gently, bracing his hand against the wall and making eye contact with Emmy. “Emmy? You’re names Emmy, right?”

She nodded, and Sam smiled brightly at her. “Emmy, I’m not going to hurt you. I just want you safe.”

She stared at him, reminding him a bit of River. After a moment she let her arms drop from around her knees and crawled forward, stopping a foot away from Sam and looking back at him.

“You promise?” she asked him, surprising Sam just a little with her diction. He nodded though and held out his hand for her to take.

“I swear on my life,” he said softly. Emmy stared at his hand for a minute, chewing on her bottom hip in thought before reaching out and taking his hand, letting him pull her out of the compartment. Once she was out Sam pulled her into his chest, letting go of a breath he hadn’t remembered holding, wrapping his arms around her tightly.

Emmy slide her arms around Sam’s neck, letting her head drop against his shoulder. Sam stood up, keeping her close to his chest as he did. He was slightly surprised to see everyone behind him, Inara and Kaylee staring at him with tears in their eyes. River stayed where she was, staring at Sam holding their daughter. He locked eyes with her and silently asked her to come closer.

“Alright,” said Mal, speaking up loudly. “Fiasco’s over. Let’s leave ‘em be.”

“She’s so pretty, Cap’n,” said Kaylee, smiling brightly at Emmy in Sam’s arms. Zoe took her by the arm and steered her towards the stairs, smiling at Sam as she did.

River took a step closer to them both, her hands clutching at her dress nervously. She ducked her head slightly, looking Emmy in the face.

“Hi,” said River softly, still looking nervous.

“Hi,” River looked up at Sam for encouragement. He nodded and Emmy moved one of her hands to her mouth, sucking on her thumb nervously.

“My name’s River,” said River softly. “We’ve met before.”

“Really?” asked Emmy thickly, her thumb getting in the way of normal speech. River nodded and reached out, hesitating a few times before placing her hand against Emmy’s cheek, brushing her thumb against her face and moving it into her hair, River’s hand getting lost in Emmy’s curls.

“Sam?” River started softly, her eyes still locked on Emmy’s. “Can we keep her?”
