Author’s Note: it’s writing stuff like this that keeps a smile on my face. Now I really want an icon of Sam and River in the grass together.
Author's Note II: This would be set sometime after The Con.

River was sitting on the ground a few yards away from the ship in the grass drawing. She let the breeze play with her hair and breathe in whatever smells were coming from the market where Kaylee and Inara were gathering supplies. Mal was finishing up a trade. Jayne wasn’t allowed outside, Zoe was somewhere enjoying the feeling of being grounded. She heard Sam walk up to her from the ship and stand next to her watching her draw.

“We should go out.”

River looked up from her drawing and stared at Sam standing in front of her with his hands stuffed into his pockets, looking nervous in his bulky frame. She giggled at him and he cleared his throat.

“I mean- like...like a date,” said rambled, shifting on his feet. “Not even a real date, just...you know, hang out? With out everyone else around, I mean.”

River bit her lip and stared at him, watched try and look as not nervous as possible before she stood up, leaving her drawing on the ground and grabbing Sam’s wrist.

“C’mon,” she said, pulling at his wrist, urging him to follow her.

He did, stumbling against the terrain as River pulled him along, past the ship and towards the edges of town. She stopped at a tree and let go of Sam’s wrist. He watched her circle the tree, staring up at whatever it was she saw. She disappeared at one point behind the trunk of the tree and reappeared in front of him, jumping down from a tree branch. Sam flailed a bit, slightly taken aback by her sudden appearance.

She didn’t seem fazed by it, or by his flailing. She held out her hand for him.

“An orange?” he asked, frowning at it. It looked like an orange, it was...orange.

“If I knew you were going to need so much taking care of I wouldn’t have kissed you,” said River with a sigh, dropping onto her back in the grass. Sam watched her peel the orange and sat down next to her , leaning back on his elbows so he could watch her.

River pulled away a piece of the fruit and held it up for Sam to take. He reached for it, but she pulled her hand away, a grin forming on her face, which Sam matched. He opened his mouth and she popped the fruit into his gaping mouth. He closed his teeth down on the orange and it squirted everywhere, making them both snort with laughter. Sam chewed on his orange piece and watched River pull apart another, the juice running down her wrist.

Sam looked around them, slightly lucky that the grass was so tall, thinking it was a bit romantic, or whatever. He looked back down at River and (with a spur of something that felt like confidence) leaned over her to kiss her, tasting the tang of orange in her mouth.. The orange in her hand fell down, hitting the ground beside them as she brought her hands to his face, her fingers cold and sticky from the fruit. Sam moved the arm that wasn’t propping him up to her waist, letting his hand trail up her side.

Sam pulled away from the kiss, letting his lips linger a few centimeters away from hers. The breeze blowing through the grass caught some of River’s hair, blowing it across her face. Sam moved his hand from her waist and brushed the hair off of her face, tucking it behind her ear.

“Is this what it’s like?” asked River, running a few of her fingers across Sam’s bottom lip, her back arching up so she could kiss him again. He caught her bottom lip in his teeth and his body shifted, the majority of his weight resting against her, one of his legs between hers.

“What what’s like?” asked Sam, pulling away breathlessly. River smiled dreamily up at him, her fingers twisting around his hair and pulling him down to her again, stopping just short of kissing her.

“You’ll see,” she said softly and kissed him gently in the tall grass next to the orange tree.
