Sam felt blood drip down his fingers, sinking into her hair and sticking to his hands. It wasn’t her blood, but she was a little girl, so that meant it wasn’t good. He felt River standing behind him as he cradled the little girl in his arms, watching her closed eyelids flutter. River didn’t move to touch her, she was still standing behind him in the glass, her bare feet shifting under the shards as they cut her feet, her blood mixing with the water on the floor.

“She’s alive,” River half whispered half whimpered. Sam turned his head to look at her. She had her hands clasped together under her chin, her hair falling around her face in wet strands. Her eyes were wide, completely terrified. Sam opened his mouth but found he couldn’t speak and instead he just nodded.

“We have to go,” said Mal behind them, trying not to ruin the moment, but they really did have to book it. Sam nodded again and looked back down at the girl, standing up, suddenly feeling very tall. He stopped once he stood up, feeling out of place. River leaned her head against his arm and swallowed, her hands still under her chin. Mal frowned.

“Ma-shong!” snapped Mal urgently, glancing over his shoulder. He was jumpy, like at any moment a guard could walk by, or one of Niska’s men to make sure they were still doing their job. Mal closed his eyes, they were kuang ren for not finishing another one of his jobs. They were beyond screwed.

Sam looked up at Mal after hesitating for a moment. He caught Mal’s eye and nodded, heading towards his captain. River didn’t move, just stood alone in the center of the room.

“Butterflies,” Sam and Mal looked back at her, Sam taking a step back towards her only to have Mal stop him. Sam looked over at him and he nodded to the door.

“Go,” Sam nodded and took off, glancing back at River one last time before he did. Mal watched him go for a moment before looking at River and heading toward her.

“What was that, darlin’?” asked Mal, reaching out to touch her arm. River didn’t look at him, but kept her eyes trained on a space on the floor.

“Butterflies,” said River again. “I want to be a butterfly so you can crush me with a frying pan. Smear me in between your fingers until you see purple on your hands. I didn’t know he was right until he was right. He’s always right, we can’t do this,” River turned her eyes onto Mal, filled with tears, her mouth hanging open slightly. “When it goes dark, I can still hear him screaming. I had to make it stop, before it ripped me apart.”

Eight hours earlier.

Mal had everyone sitting at the kitchen table as he replayed the plans to the crew. Jayne would provide a distraction (which would most likely involve Jayne shooting things), Kaylee, Simon, and Zoe had to get Mal, River and Sam in (something with Simon was still protesting) without being detected. Mal tried not to think about how impossible this was going to be. They didn’t even know what they were looking for.

“We have a room number,” said Zoe, continuing from where Mal had left off. “Sam, River and Mal are going to get the loot and we’ll all just disappear.”

“Easy for you to say,” grumbled Jayne. “We can’t go in there like we did last time, guns blazing.”

“No, that’s what you’re going to do,” said Simon. He turned to look at Mal, who didn’t seem to be paying attention. “Do we even know what we’re looking for?”

“Something very dangerous,” said River softly. Everyone turned to stare at her.

“We should probably get this going,” said Mal, hooking his thumb around his belt loop. He nodded for Sam and River to stand up and follow him, heading for the cargo bay.

“Mal, are you...do you plan on giving this thing to Niska?” asked Sam as he and River followed Mal. He kept walking, not answering Sam, which was answer enough. “Mal-”

“Niska doesn’t expect us to be loyal to him,” said Mal. “Wouldn’t want to disappoint.”
