Author’s Note: This is set after…well, nothing really. It’s a bit after everyone has fun down on Earth. And now I’m not offending anyone with my Sam here, I know if given the opportunity he’d never consider arguing this point with Simon, but it’s the fact that Simon’s telling him to that’s pissing Sam off so much. I don’t know why I’m posting this now when the crew is still on freakin’ Earth, oh well.
River was sitting on her bed with her knees pulled up to her chest. Sam was sitting next to her staring with his mouth hanging open, up at Simon who was standing in front of the two of them. Sam cleared his throat and blinked a couple times.
“Could you repeat that for me, Simon, I’m not sure I understand.”
“You understand fine,” said River, looking over at Sam who reached over and covered her mouth with his hand, still staring at Simon.
“It would be easier on the captain-”
“No, it wouldn’t,” said Sam. “Me and River gettin’ married? That’s not going to help anyone.”
“It would make me feel better,” said Simon. “What do you think, River?”
River looked at Sam, who’s hand was still covering her mouth. He pulled it off sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck, as he and Simon stared at River expectantly. She looked from one to the other slowly as they waited for her to answer.
“Simon,” she said quietly standing up and facing her brother with the confident air she rarely used. “I don’t meddle in the affairs of dragons, Simon,” she said simply and walked past him with her nose in the air. Sam watched her go, leaning sideways until she disappeared down around the corner.
“Sam,” Sam’s eyes snapped back onto Simon. “It makes sense for the two of you to get married.”
“What kind of sense?” asked Sam, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “We’re in the middle of no where, Simon. We can’t get married. If people found out Mal would be in for a world of trouble, you know that. What if word got around to people in high places, what if got out to your parents?”
Simon didn’t say anything for a long time, making Sam slightly uncomfortable.
“Simon,” he began, shifting slightly on the bed. “Do you want us to get married so you can go home?”
“I just want you two together,” Sam ran his hand over his mouth, looking away from Simon and at the floor.
“We are together, Simon,” he said, looking back at the older man. Simon sighed and sat down on the chair behind him, leaning forward.
“Listen, Sam,” started Simon. “You and River getting married mean River changin’ her name. It would be harder for people to find her if she doesn’t exist.”
“Because I don’t exist,” asked Sam. Simon nodded and Sam huffed. “I don’t even wanna know what goes on in your brain to come up with crazy idea’s like that.”
“Think about it?” asked Simon. Sam didn’t answer him so Simon left him sitting on the bed by himself
