Author's Note: It was cute and I wanted to do it. It set in the middle of the Shadow/Hallway thing.
“I love you.”
Sam turned over in bed, his hair falling into his eyes as he stared sleepily up at River. She had her head bowed slightly and her hands clasped in front on her, like she was nervous. Sam blinked heavily at her.
“What?” he asked groggily. River reached over to the lamp at his bedside and turned it on, making Sam groan and cover his eyes with his arm. “River...”
“I love you,” she said again. Sam peered at her over his arm, his eyes watering a bit from the brightness of the room.
“Okay,” he said, turning back over in bed. River tilted her head to the side in concern.
“What does that mean?” she asked. “Okay?”
“It means I love you too,” muttered Sam through his mattress.
“Why didn't you say it then?” asked River, sitting down next to Sam on his bed. “Is there a reason? I'm not-”
“Sleep,” Sam muttered, sitting back up and pulling River down onto the bed next to him, burrowing his face into the back of her neck. River frowned again, her eye twitching slightly.
“But I still don't get it.”
“It doesn't matter, River,” said Sam, tightening his arms around River's waist and pressing his lips against the back of her neck. “Tell me you love me in the morning.”
“It is morning.”
“It's morning when Jayne gets out of bed,” said Sam. “That's not for at least another five hours.”
“Why can't I tell you now?” asked River.
“River?”
“Yes.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too, Sam.”
“Shiny, now go to sleep.”
“Sam?”
“Yes, River?”
“I'm going to be sick.”
