This may interest those of you who are interested in textiles and the history of same.
I came across these rather fascinating (to me anyway) bits of information after just reading a fan fic that described Minerva McGonagall's wardrobe as consisting of 'tartan plaid'. I was listening to a bit of Scottish folk music today too, so, being in that frame

Gerard Butler in that photo is... uh...
(what movie is that?!) Between that photo and him as Leonidas in 300... whew...
And Liam...well... if I was taken, he could come find me.

And Liam Neeson - well, you said it all.
There's something about a manly man in a kilt, isn't there? Especially those two.
I really am going to print that one of Gerard Butler up and pant over it in true teen style - I'm hopeless.

I have Attila and 300, but I'll have to hunt up Beowulf & Grendel - I hope it's a better production than Attila - not awful, but if it weren't for the inspiring view, it would be a bit of a yawn.
I liked 300 though - a great stylised version of the graphic novel that they based it on.
I liked Sin City too for the same reason.
You weren't alone in imagining Lucius in a kilt, believe me!
As to them threatening us with underwear:

I am still a little confused as to why they would use Julia Stiles (I mean...huh....right...).
Ahh...sword & sandals movies are always a good thing- mostly. I did quite enjoy 300 & I even managed to put aside my historical biases- probably *because* the movie was based on a graphica novel. (I've been to historical site, and, I have to admit, I rather hoped that Leonidas looked like Butler - I'm sure the real king would be horrified by us & and would lecture us to death about duty, Greece, and the Persians). Troy, & and its wild inaccuracies, induces a white, hot anger in me that no amount of men in tunics can appease.

I've known quite a few Scots in my time, and even the ones I know are nasty buggers can be charming when the mood takes them.

Dammit. It's fun being charmed.

What's worn under a Scotsman's kilt? Nothing... It's all in good working order... (Usually followed by a lift of the front of the kilt to demonstrate the functioning parts.)
Plaid is the length of fabric, now usually used as the over the shoulder plaid for men, or shawl for women, previously used to make up the whole kilt by pleating, belting and draping the end over the shoulder.
Tartan is the fabric and the pattern. Tartan's are now clan/family specific, but this is quite a modern concept.
My tartan is the Douglas, a clan who were of similar influence to the Stuarts, but never quite made the grade. The Douglas motto is 'Jamais en arriere'... never behind / never last... A reasonable to motto to live by.

My choice of tartan is Ancient Green Douglas. I have a relative known as Black Douglas, so none of us were allowed to wear Black Douglas, because he was a bit of a black sheep of the family.
The boys love wearing the kilt. Very liberating, so I'm told. And the girls love them in it. It's a real chick magnet.
