Brilliant Planning

I'm going to blame my slightly elevated triglyceride and blood glucose levels on the fact that I had my blood taken for testing a mere three days after Thanksgiving (not to mention the week after Let's Eat Portland Week with the 'Starks).

But...

I still feel guilty and bad. :P

health, diet schmiet, body horror

Totally valid blame. I once had my cholesterol tested a week after finals week of my senior year of college - a week in which I survived entirely on cheese pizza, coffee, pink and white animal cookies, and beer.

I failed that particular test.

Whew! I feel better... because, without exaggeration, we probably had two sticks of butter each during those three days of gorging eating.

Well, better is a relative term. I am also feeling highly embarassed.

I think you and I (and probably 3/4 of the nation) are in the same boat right now. Get back to your regularly scheduled daily diet, give it another month or so and I am sure your results will be more to your liking. Lots of oatmeal, just leave the sausage out of it ;)

Heh. Yeah, yesterday evening after receiving the news about my triglycerides I consoled myself with potato and cheddar pancakes (and Brussels sprouts! Those are healthy, right? OK, they had butter on them, but butter ain't bad!)... and two (thin) slices of rum cake. What can I do? My diet plan has always been "if it's in the house, I'll eat it. So don't let it in the house!"

Don't feel bad, I've probably eaten 2 sticks of butter myself in the past week and (for the moment at least) I'm still alive. Besides, you do all that biking and stuff which probably makes you more fit than 90% of the population.

Since last week I've been bussing/driving all over the place, which has probably added to my richer, more sumptuous blood.

I did finally bike this morning. When did it get so gorram cold?!

I still stand firmly behind our household's use of butter (over margarine). And I'm working toward not regretting my Week of Excess. Because it was fantastic. But I definitely need to step up on the exercise front to get rid of the sub-conscious, residual guilt.

A funny story about butter... audreymcqueen November 28 2007, 16:52:00 UTC
Since everything has the potential to end up being bad for you, I just go with whatever tastes the best and has the least amount of chemicals in it. There is nothing anyone can tell me to make me believe that food created in a chemistry lab is good for you ( ... )

That is the worst kind of Folgers Switch!!! How horrible. Yet, Alanis Morrisette-ishly ironic.

(Thus, yes, funny too.)

as you know, my last cholesterol test was through the roof, and that wasn't even after a particular kind of foodie indulgence. i think this is just a case of unfortunate timing, and aside from feeling bad, i still think you're a great deal more active than most of us! the levels in your blood just need a little time to de-spike.

My cholesterol level has been creeping ever upward (from 170 in my adolescence to the 190's now) but I'm trying not to let it bother me.

My mother's was astronomical after chemo (at least I'm blaming the chemo since she eats crazy healthy and is about five sacks of potatoes lighter than I) so I tend to think of her number as the danger zone (I think it was over 400).

I am due for a re-screening in three months. So it's oats and elliptical for breakfast for a little while.
