How my life is mostly about JE

☂ I rarely comment on kattunlove, but apparently I feel really strongly about the current Arashi fansubbing issues. This kind of confirmed a few of my thoughts and kind of makes stormy_team and sbkfansubs seem... well, yes. Not that I disagree with locking subs, but the whole application process is just so.. out there ( Read more... )

ilu kame-chan, kame needs so much love, geekery, so pleased, university is traumatic, my life is so mundane, they call it work experience, i want moar time, je: kat-tun, dorkitude, je: arashi, je

The subs thing... we seem to be on the same page with this. As I said in that comment, I've applied to stormy_team now just to see whether it's maybe more of a PR issue with them and their process isn't actually as insane as it seems, or as the sbkfansubs one. If all they want is people to 'sign' an undertaking and prove somehow that they are 'real people', fine, I can live with that. (I still think it's pointless, but it doesn't make me foam at the mouth and want to go start a hate meme, the way that idiotic sbkfansubs thing did. *g*)

And YAY for the ratings! :-) That's so good to know. And I also finally saw confirmation of that movie premiere which clashed with it, too. :-D

*Just kidding about the hate meme...

I had the tab opened and was going to reply to your comment. ;) It'll be interesting to see what happens with your application. I don't think it's a PR issue though, but it's more of a feeling I get. I just don't like their tone, or the way they went about it. Basically, if a mod rejects you, you can't ask why. Then, you have to wait for a month before you can re-apply. Again, it's the tone. The implication that you have to do all these things to prove yourself and will be judged without question or protest by the mods. I've actually heard of other people being rejected (sometimes multiple times) and they have no idea why.

It just really leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I read about fans being nervous about their applications and how they hope this time they'll get in, etc etc.

I've heard about sbkfansubs too, and they sound like they could be even worse ( ... )

I agree completely about the tone, and that's why I didn't try them in the first place and totally understood where the people who complained were coming from. But then in that discussion I thought, well, let's find out whether they are maybe just INEPT and don't even realize they sound like arrogant shits. I should give them the benefit of the doubt. Which is what the current application experiment is about.

(Well, that, and the fact that I would much rather watch downloaded HQ than some crappy streamed flv on youtube.)

They're playing power games, is my impression.

Which is pretty much my impression too, and why I haven't applied for stormy-team. It raises my heckles like nothing else, and I'd be getting pretty alarmed if restrictions like this were placed in a RL context.

I get the feeling whether the application is accepted or denied is purely up to which moderator is looking at your application and what mood that moderator is in. I've seen fans who have been easily accepted and fans who have been denied multiple times, and I've seen fans trying to figure out the 'correct' way to write their essays just so they can get in. It's very subjective, which is another flaw in their application process.

I'm glad I didn't know about sbkfansubs or I would have been even more... strong feelings about them. *g*

It's puzzling how Arashi fansubbing have become like this. I do wonder if the fansub groups are aware that issues like these could easily turn away new/potential Arashi fans.

The whole subs thing is just ridiculous. I think closing membership just makes people use streaming sites more, plus for every sub group that stops subbing, someone else will take it up. Also, closing/moderating membership won't stop people from uploading to streaming sites either ( ... )

It really is. I agree wholeheartedly-they're not solving any of their streaming issues by doing this. In fact, just the opposite, and not to mention they've pretty much turned off a lot of people ( ... )

I sort of find the whole idea of locking subs up ridiculous, in the same way that I find the idea of banning the uploads of albums and singles before the release date ridiculous. At the end of the day, what they are doing is illegal, and ok, yes, some people have received letters/emails from companies who work with JE to stop the illegal distribution of photos or JE merchandise, but at the same time I doubt JE are all that bothered with chasing every single person online who is subbing dramas and putting them onto streaming sites.

I think my main problem with sbkfansubs is how rude they came across as--it was very much a case of 'we are very pissed off and so we are going to be nasty and condescending and if you don't like it you can fuck off'. And like I understand their irritation about people putting the passwords to the latest Quiz Show subs onto the hate meme, but at the same time I can understand why someone did it. Idk. I'm not going to join sbkfansubs or stormy_team because I don't care all that much about Arashi or K8 and I'm not about to try and justify ( ... )

While I can understand locking subs, I find their application process unreasonable and baffling. And I agree with you about the JE thing. It's doubtful that JE would care so much, and to my knowledge, no one has been sued. There might have been cease and desist letters but if we're following JE's rules, then by all rights everyone on LJ or anyone who has ever posted JE pics, etc, would have gotten them too. The cease and desist letters aren't limited to fansubs or videos. I find the whole mass hysteria baffling, especially with the fansubbing groups so paranoid about being found out and yet so willing to mark their names all over the vids. Kind of ironic, no?

Yeah, I agree pretty much. My impression of both stormy-team and sbkfansubs is that they're really just playing power games. And to be honest, all this backlash was pretty predictable. They thought they could still retain goodwill from fans while treating them rudely and condescendingly and like potential 'streaming criminals'? Heh, good luck with that. There's a reason why 'guilty until proven ( ... )
