I think part of what people are dreading is that Jenna ends up being just another person from the 21st Century.
We have had Companions of different ages and genders, but all of them have ended up being from the present time in some way. Even River and Jack. River started out with us thinking she was from the 51st Century, then it ends up she was raised in Leadworth with Amy. Jack may have started out as a time agent, but still ended up living most of his onscreen life in the present day.
There hasn't, yet, been a New Who Companion who was from any other time or planet. For a show that travels in time and space it's gotten very parochial. I think people are just wanting a Leela, or a Romana, or a Zoe, or a Jamie, or just someone who isn't "just like us."
You speak the truth. If there isn't another non-white companion or either a black or female Doctor Who in say... 5 or 10 years, then I'll be getting a bit suspicious. But the main cast list for Who is actually quite small, and compared to nationwide demographics, they're actually over performing in terms of diversity.
