20 years have now passed since cartoonist Charles Addams was found dead, slumped over the steering wheel of his car on September 29, 1988. Addams had succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 76. For 48 years he'd been a full-time cartoonist for the New Yorker, with another 8 years of doing spec work prior to that.

Charles Addams was considered quite a catch in his day, and his datebook was filled with the names of numerous starlets and society pagers. It seems somewhat sad and strange to me that Charles Addams and Edward Gorey never met, despite both being New Yorker darlings and living within a small proximity of each other. Addams was extroverted to the extreme, whereas Gorey was notoriously secretive and very private, so that might have been the reason.
