Detective Wheeler is a little shocked to find himself in a library, but it's by far not the weirdest thing that's happened all night, so he gets over it quick. He spends a moment by the doors listening for sirens, but it appears he's lost the cops for now ( Read more... )

Irene is in the stacks, trying to be quiet. The same librarian hushed her, causing Irene to feel like she'd taken a cookie from the cookie jar.

She is tired and exhausted and wants to sleep. That's all she wants to do. She grabs a book off the shelf and opens it, sinking to the ground, trying to give the impression of reading.

But then she hears footsteps, and she stands up quickly, shutting the book, prepared to whack whoever it is if they're far too pale. She grips the book tightly, trembling slightly. If she knew how to do whatever she did, she'd do it, but right now, a book seems like a decent weapon.

The book is about to be swung when she sees who it is.

"Sam!" she hisses, quietly. Sam gets a sudden, unstoppable hug.

Sam turns the corner of a shelf, and there's Irene holding a large book menacingly. Then suddenly he's being hugged. It takes a second or two for his brain to process what's going on, and then hugs her back. "It is so good to see you," he whispers.

But then he realizes it isn't, because that means Irene might be in danger, too. He holds her at arm's length and looks at her worriedly. "Are you okay? How did you end up here?" Sam looks a little ragged, but otherwise no worse for wear.

"You have no idea how good it is to see you," she says, weakly. Irene hangs onto him until he holds her at arm's length, which she doesn't protest, because at this point seeing Sam is an amazingly wonderful thing.

"Sam," she says, "I - you know those conspiracies we're always talking about? How the city isn't what it seems? Sam, I..." she closes her eyes. "Sam... I... I killed something, Sam. It was coming after me, but..."

She opens her eyes. "I'm sounding insane, aren't I?"

Sam shakes his head adamantly. "No, not at all." He feels a profound sense of relief that he's not alone, that someone else understands and sees through the lies. "Irene, I killed one of them, too. An alien, right? They control the city -- they can change the city, put people to sleep--"

He blinks. "You killed it?" He thinks of Chantal and her magical powers. Does Irene have powers too?
